BUHSD Winter Sports Update

The Winter Sports Season will be starting, Monday, December 7, 2020 for Buckeye Union High School District. This will be the official start date for all practices/tryouts, and competition will begin on January 5, 2021. There are some pretty significant changes currently in place for Winter Sports. Below are those changes, along with a refresher of our normal requirements for participation in Interscholastic Sports in the Buckeye Union High School District.

Eligibility to start practice on Monday, December 7th:

  • Student Athlete must have a valid physical on file with the Athletic Office
    • If your student-athlete played a sport for one of our teams last year and did not suffer a concussion or injury that required clearance to play, they do not need a new physical. We will use last years physicals per the AIA rule put in place for this year.
    • If you are a new student, Freshman, or did not play a sport at one of our BUHSD schools last year, you will need to get a physical.
  • Student Athlete must have all forms completed on Rank One
    • You can find the instructions and required physical forms on our school or district website under the Athletics tab (Athletic Packet Link)
  • Brain Book and Opioid Courses need to be completed
    • If your student-athlete played a sport last year or in the Fall they already have the Brain Book done and do not need to take that course again.
    • All student athletes will need to complete the new Opioid Course

    Practice Requirements:

  • All student athletes always need to wear a mask while on campus including during practice.
    • Coaches are also expected to wear masks at all times and at no time should their mask be removed from their nose and mouth.
  • They will be permitted to take off their mask during high intensity activities/conditioning.
  • Student Athletes need to bring their own gallon of water to practice
  • Student Athletes need to come to practice dressed and ready for practice. We will not provide locker rooms at this time.
  • All practices are closed and parents or any visitor will not be permitted to watch or be at practices.

         Game Requirements:

  • Student Athletes must be passing all their classes to play in games. We will do weekly grade checks and the eligibility period is Wednesday to Wednesday every week.
  • Student Athlete must have participated in at least 14 practices before they can play in any competition.
  • Student Athletes must attend all road events with the team on district transportation. This goes for all student athletes regardless of what learning model has been chosen by the family.
  • There will be no spectators at any event, home or away, until further notice. Per AIA
    • We will continue to work with Prep Spotlight to stream all varsity games. There is a fee to watch those livestreams. If they cannot stream an event we will work to try and have it streamed on social media and provide you with those details.

    New Rules regarding Club Sports:

  • If a student athlete participates in any scrimmage, game, or tournament/showcase/invitational with a club team they will have to go through a 14 day exclusion protocol. The 14 days will start from the last date they played or practiced with the club.
    • This goes for all club sports, not just the club sport in season. Ex. if you are on the Girls Soccer Team at school and attend a club volleyball or softball practice, event, or tournament, you will not be able to attend, or participate in any school practice or contest for 14 days. This example was for a female athlete, but the rules are the same for male athletes.
