English Learner Program

The goal of the Buckeye Union High School District’s English Learner Program is to provide tools for English Learners (ELs) to develop English skills to proficiency. Instruction will be delivered using the Structured English Immersion model to ensure students are successful in English academics. It is our desire to help students achieve their goal of graduation and improve opportunities for success in the future.

Program Information

Students earning composite scores below Proficient on the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) will be placed in the Structured English Instruction (SEI) program.

The objective of the SEI classroom is to teach English skills derived from English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). There are three course offerings for English Language Development: ELD Oral English Conversation/Vocabular & Reading, ELD Writing/Grammar, and ELD Reading & Writing (students scoring Intermediate). We are also offering a new program placement called Structured English Immersion Pull-Out; this is instruction for students close to English proficiency and is delivered in one-to-one or small-group instruction.

Research shows it takes two to seven years to acquire a new language. Actual exit time is dependent on several factors including instruction, student attendance, and individual effort. We know that students who have not yet scored Proficient on the AZELLA are not performing at grade level in the areas of reading, writing, listening, or speaking. It is our goal to provide individualized instruction to help students reach English proficiency.

Because parents play a key role in their student’s education, BUHSD informs parents of all available instructional services.

The EL Program at BUHSD believes that success is dependent upon teamwork. Our staff hopes to build relationships between program staff, students, parents, and the communities we serve. It is our vision to help students achieve English proficiency, graduate, and prepare for post-secondary success during their time in our district.
