BUHSD Update

BUHSD Families:

I want to start by thanking you, as families, for entrusting the staff of the Buckeye Union High School District with the privilege of educating your most prized possession - your child.  This past year has been difficult and challenging for everyone, but we as a district are excited to be moving forward with the full re-opening of schools for the 2021-22 academic year with two different learning options available for students: In-Person and LC Online.

In-Person: BUHSD is looking forward to having students back on campus full-time, in-person for the 21-22 academic year.  With this option, students attend school in-person 5 days per week as they did prior to the school closures that resulted from the Covid pandemic.  Attendance will be taken each class period.  If a student is not physically present in the classroom, the parent will need to call in or send a note to the attendance office to excuse the absence.  Recommended sanitation and safety protocols will be followed as students are brought back on campus, but every effort will be made to make school feel as normal as possible for students.

LC Online: The Buckeye Union High School District Learning Center Online program (LC Online) is a comprehensive online program where students progress through Edgenuity, a nationally-recognized curriculum aligned to Arizona State Academic Standards, at their own pace – using an Assignment Calendar provided in the system to stay on track to finish the courses in which they are enrolled by the end of the semester.  Students learn course content through pre-recorded videos of teachers teaching, readings, and Guided Notes that they have access to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Students take quizzes after each lesson and tests after each unit.  Teachers monitor and support students’ progress and are available to help students when needed.  The only time students are required to physically come to a district campus is for individually scheduled Final Cumulative Exams, usually taken at the BUHSD Learning Center at the end of the semester.  A Family Portal is available to monitor students’ progress.  Students who choose this option are eligible to participate in activities and athletics at their home campus.

When students choose between the two options available in BUHSD for the 2021-22 academic year, the students commit to complete the semester in that format.  Changing between options needs to take place at a semester break.

We recognize that this is an important decision for families to make and many individual factors need to be considered.  We ask that you carefully consider which option will be best for your student individually for first semester; you will have the ability to change options second semester.  If you are choosing to have your student return to campus in-person, you should have received information from your student’s school regarding summer registration taking place next week.  No other action is needed to declare that option.  If you are choosing to have your student participate in the LC Online program, please use this link (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0Qie2UzxGOEz-S5ZscuGo16PYax2M9B78alB0ufv7inbJqA/viewform?usp=sf_link) to declare that option.  You will be sent information about registration that will take place for online students during the week of July 26th.

For students returning in-person, a Safe Return to Schools plan will be posted on the district website (www.buhsd.org) with details on mitigation strategies that will remain in place for the upcoming school year.  Part of that plan includes that the BUHSD Governing Board has rescinded the policies put in place last year that required all students and staff to wear cloth masks while on campus or at school-sponsored events.  With the ability for those 12 and older to be vaccinated, mask wearing is now an individual choice.  Students, staff, and others who may be on campus have the option to wear a mask, but it is no longer required.

Thank you again for choosing BUHSD for your student!  Please remember to use the options link above if you are choosing LC Online for your student.  Otherwise, we will see you at registration at the schools next week.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Bebee
